Warring parties in South Sudan delayed direct peace talks on Saturday dashing hopes of a swift ceasefire to end raging fighting and the risk of a slide into all-out civil war. While top leaders of the government and rebel teams have briefly met directly, the rivals continued Saturday to hold separate talks with negotiators.

This event, which is deeply rooted in Cape Malay culture, gathers more than 13,000 performers in about 70 groups of musicians, dancers and other troupe members in brightly coloured outfits and ornately painted faces, who parade through the city, playing Ghoema music (comic songs often accompanied by brass, or banjo). This carnival is ususally held on the 2nd of January every year, which is called, the "Second New Year", and dates back to the time of slaves in the Cape Colony, when the slaves were given, the day after New Year off, which they spent, in part, singing and dancing.

The Central African Republic, already chronically unstable, plunged into chaos after mainly Muslim Seleka rebels staged the coup last year. Last month, French troops intervened to try to stem resurging violence pitting former rebels against militias from the country's Christian majority bolstered by fighters loyal to the ousted regime.
